Where can you find cheap online schools? How about a free one?

Online schools come in all shapes and sizes. The best advice I have found about online home schools is that they cost as much as you want them to.

The most basic model is to only use the library and then complete all the exams. This of course, as well as being really hard, is not the model this site recommends as it is good to attend regionally accredited online schools. The reason for this is simple - to find the best jobs and the best places in the best colleges, you need to have a recognised qualification.

If you live in the US however, the first port of call must always be to find your local online charter school. These will give you the same diploma that the local public school will give you - but you complete it at home, in your time frame. What happens if you don't want to go to a charter school or there are none available in your state?

There are a range of different cheap online schools available.

The most popular one is known as www.K12.com . Lots of people have written positive things about this site. It works with regionally accredited online schools and it is broken down into a state by state list - with details of public and privately run schools who are their partners - you can even buy the materials directly from them and study for the exams without any further help. The big advantage to these schools is that if you live in these states, you can transfer your credits over to them from your old school and if you enrol full time, you will get a free computer as well.

BYU Independent Study offers a huge range of low cost courses you can choose to complete and have marked. BYU is accredited as an institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). BYU Independent Study's High School program is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS) and the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

It is worth checking you agree with their course content before buying anything or it could be a complete waste of time and money - however saying that - I did like how professional their site is, and it was recommend to me by an experienced home schooling parent.

In summery - there are lots of different low cost virtual schools, cheap online schools and free charter schools to choose from. I can't recommend any above any other, purely because it all depends on your personal needs and what you are expecting to gain from this style of education.

I would highly recommend however that you always check you are attending an accredited online school and that your qualifications will be respected by the colleges you later plan to apply to. It is also worth chatting to an educational advisor, as to which courses you should select to maintain a balanced range of subjects, which won't limit your future choices.
