Hawaii homeschool

Looking for Great Hawaii Homeschool support and ideas? Are you looking for support with starting a homeschool in Hawaii?

I have found a really interesting starting point for anyone wanting to start a homeschool in Hawaii. It is the Hawai'i Homeschool Association (HHA).

Where can I meet families with Hawai'i Homeschool Association

First and Third Tuesday of every month 11:30 AM at the Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park

Lots of families bring suncream, deck chairs or blankets, and a nice picnic. Some also bring along sports equipment, games, toys and resources they want to share with the rest of the group.

What do I need to homeschool in Hawaii?

You need to complete a letter of intent prior to start to starting homeschooling in Hawaii or complete the form Form 4140 – you don’t need to complete both but it is handy if you do.

Likewise you need to only submit this form only once – unless you are moving to a new area and so would be in a ‘new school’ or the child would be expected to transfer up to another school due to their age, then you would need to inform the new school that you plan to homeschool.

You don’t need to go into school to inform the teachers directly, however some have found that they have gained lots of support from their school. Some schools do try to persuade you to change your mind.

Remember that home-schooled children do tend to progress quicker in many cases than traditionally taught children – hold on to this if you get teachers who are negative.

You don’t need to enroll your child in any school – you only need to supply the form or letter of intent with all the information required. However, school personnel do enter new homeschoolers into "the system" in order to process homeschooling paperwork. This will not directly involve you.

You don’t need to provide the school with a copy of the curriculum you are using. They may however wish to see it if your child does not make as much progress as you wish.

What Hawaii Homeschool resources are on offer?

When you have decided that this is the way forward for you, then you should click on this link and find out what different homeschooling resources are on offer. I read through many of these documents and found them very clear and easy to use. I especially liked the recommended reading lists. They will provide you with all the information that you need.

If you know of any other great home school associations - please get in touch and I will add them to this part of the site.
