Online high school courses are growing in popularity. A decade ago only the most nerdy, technical loving students would have seriously considered taking courses online. Now it is a booming industry, and lots of people are looking for high school courses online. It is great for those who want to boost their conventional schooling, or as a complete alternative. However, while the technology is simple to use – there are 5 important questions you need to ask yourself before you start – it could save you thousands of dollars, and stop you making a chose you will later regret.

1) How much time do you really have? :- Many people think that studying online is the easy way out – a simple option – which must be easier than having to go to school day after day! However most online courses need regular participation – and a lot more discipline than a typical school. You will still need to log on several times a week, complete homework and assignments and find time to share notes with other online students. You also need to still keep an accurate log of the time you would have spent in a traditional class.

If you do feel you have lots of time and are capable of keeping track of your own learning, then this could be an excellent educational route, as you will gain flexibility and freedom from lower quality schools.

2) Are you disciplined enough to take responsibility for your own learn?:- While most high school courses online don’t require you to be studying at a specific time, at the end of the week, you still need to show your work is complete. With other distractions such as kids, work or caring for others, this could easily be placed as a low priority.

A free alternative to those in the US is to investigate in their online charter schools. The government has a state provision of online schools for anyone living within the state – these schools will provide accredited online diplomas, along with all the school equipment needed and tutor support – as an alternative to state education.

4) Can you use a computer?:- You may need to take a sample high school course online before starting with an online school – you should ask for some sample lessons or sample materials to see how well you can cope with the courses. You need to know enough to be able to email, type and communicate with your online tutor and also with your fellow students.

5) Do you have the right computer equipment?:- To be a successful online student, you will need regular access to a computer and internet access. Your computer should also have an update copy of virus checkers to make sure all your school work does not get lost just before you need to submit it!

Many online schools do provide a laptop and the software you will need – this depends on the individual school to complete the high school courses online. You will also need a good word processor package – you could use Microsoft Word – or as a reliable alternative – check out the software called ‘Open Office’ – Google it.
