Mom/Parent opinion on K12 independent study

I enrolled my children with K12 online independent study courses in order to do homeschool with them. While the curriculum was good and in fact more advanced than the public school system available here in Hawaii, I was very unhappy to learn the hard way that they charge a $175 early termination fee if you want to cancel the one-year service. There is no information to this effect online, nor is there any information given in any conversations with customer representatives that they will charge this amount until you go and try to terminate your services with them early. Even if you finish all the courses early, if you have a one-year contract, they charge an early termination fee or else charge you a monthly fee until the contract ends. Perhaps there is little tiny writing somewhere that this fee will take place, but it should be something you are told up front before signing on for the school. There are other schools worth investigating before you go with K12 unless you can do it through a charter school sponsored by a particular US state where you don't pay any fees at all. Make sure you check out what fees will apply for ALL services and ask what happens if you finish or have to terminate any services early for any online schools. Otherwise, you could be paying out the nose for choosing to do school online. I do not recommend using K12 independent study courses. Way too expensive.
