Online mechanical engineering degree - it just goes to show what you can do online!

I didn't think I could do an online mechanical engineering degree - I thought there must be some degrees which are simply impossible to complete via a computer - mechanical engineering seems a way too practical course to be able to do it all via a keyboard and some headphones... I like to admit I am wrong.

Why would I do an online engineering degree?

The joy of studying online is that you can choose the best online school for you - no matter where you happen to be in the country. It also means you can carry on earning while you are learning - your full time job can cover some, if not all the costs of the course.

In addition, you can study in your own time - making it a very flexible option. The only real things you need to think about are if you have time for full time study, and a full time job.

I could only find online engineering master degrees - which does help to explain a lot, as obviously they are expecting you to already be a mechanical engineer, who is probably looking for improved qualifications, to keep your skills current, and allow you to progress rapidly in your engineering career.

Where can I study an online mechanical engineering degree?

I have done some research and found out that there are lots off different option - I would search for an online engineering degree in your own state, using Google, as then you can be confident that the qualification is recognised in your state.

Here are a few of the courses I found for you.

  • Columbia University: Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. (Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools)
  • University of Missouri - Rolla: Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • University of Idaho: Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering non thesis degree (Accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges)
  • Michigan Technological University: Global Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering through distance education (Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools)
  • Florida State University: Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree (Accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET))

What can I do after I qualify with an online mechanical engineering degree?

A fully trained mechanical engineer can practice his or her vocation in a number of settings, and provide a wide range of services.

They are often responsible for designing and building public buildings. Obviously as you have gained your online mechanical engineering degree, you will be given a larger responsibility in bringing the project together.

Mechanical engineers are everywhere where things being built are. You could have to redesign a machine to make it runner more economically, smaller, quieter or faster. Mechanical engineers are the guys who got the space rockets flying, and have been responsible for most of the major inventions over the last century.

How much would I get paid after completing an online mechanical engineering degree?

It all depends on what you do and who you work for - but as you can see below, gaining an online engineering degree would help you greatly.

    1. A Junior Engineer makes $40,000 - $50,000.
