Free online school books for everyone!

I am going to introduce you to 2 different places where you can find online school books. Both of them offer online school books for free.

The first place I would like to suggest you look for school books online is Google Books Google offer a great range of books. When you first go onto the site, you are almost certain to be disappointed, as you will get to a certain page and find a blank page there with ‘This page has not been included in the preview’, which of course means one of two things. You can either click on the left hand bar, and buy the book, or you can miss out those pages.

However, when you read more closely, you will find that there are in fact two different options for school books online which you can follow. The first is to miss those vital pages, the second is to search using the advanced search option. When you do this, you are then able to only search for books which offer only a full view. Of course there are fewer books to choose from, but at least you can read about all the different topics you are interested in for free.

This is a growing library of free books, and the books are well laid out and easy to read. You can now even take this link and download it onto your I-phone, and read it at your leisure while catching a train. This is oddly enough how I spend my days travelling to and from work. It is great – and does give you access to books and topics you may never have otherwise thought about reading.

If however you do decide that you wish to buy school book online - then Google offers you a second wonderful service, as every book they show on their website - especially the books with pages missing, they also allow you to order and buy schools book online - so that you can always hold and keep a paper version - something I really enjoy using.

The second place to find free text books is Gutenberg project . This is a huge collection of out of copyright books (in comparison to Google, which publishes books inside and outside of copyright). This is a great source of classical literature and older textbooks. The other advantage of this is that you can freely download and print off any books you find on this site. I have downloaded many books from here.

It also has an additional feature, where you can take the time to download school books online such as classical literature in the form of audio books – perfect for listening to in the car, where at the end of each chapter, you can discuss what you heard with your child, increasing their thinking processes and expressive vocabulary.

There are of course many other sources of online school books. I must admit though that I would also recommend that children are encourage to visit their library, read and buy school book online, or even better, in a book shop where they can browse, hold and read before they buy them, and share them without a computer screen as sometimes it is nice to be able to look at a page and study it under a tree – which is still less fun on a computer screen!
