Why Home School?

So you want to have your own online home school?

Why home school? What reasons could you have for wanting to run your own school – rather than rely on the state schools?

1)Discipline: Your child may be a bit of a handful at school and so not fully gaining the learning experience they could be. By being home-schooled, you have more time to develop trust and respect between yourself and your child. It also lets you develop different strategies which may help your child to behave more appropriately. Why home school? You will have a more disciplined child.

2)Develops the child’s and parents character: By working together every day, a home-schooled child and a parent will learn patience. Your child models their behaviour on your behaviour. Only by showing restraint and calmness can a child learn the same lessons. The extra attention given to a home-schooled child’s achievements will also make the student much more studious.

3)Improve your own learning: The greatest way to teach is to learn. A child needs to see you as a life long learner. Only by working on a problem together, will you both learn how to complete a subject. There are thousands of websites and resources for you to use to help you with any subject, not to mention YouTube for highly educational videos. In my classroom, I have often fallen back onto YouTube videos as a way to show or stretch a point. This is particularly useful in subjects such as History or Science. Why home school? You will learn a lot more about the world you live in and your home-schooled child will be able to share more of it with you.

4)It is good to sometimes step off the career ladder: I have often be saddened by parents who employ me as a tutor (a very good tutor I hasten to add!). Watching a child grow up, spending time sharing your own skills and developing their thoughts should be considered a golden time – a childhood is gone in an instant. Do you really want someone else to get all the pleasures from watching your child blossom into a beautiful young adult? What could be more important in life than the gentle guidance of a parent? Why home school? No one ever said 'I wish I spent more time at work - they do say 'I wish I spent more time with the kids!'

5)Improved Time Management: You may look at your day and think there is no extra time to spend with your child. This is one of those odd things about life. There is always much more time than you think. If you have a new baby, you don’t continue your old routines, you develop newer, quicker methods. If you want to home school your child, you will find that time somehow, without explanation, extends and suddenly you will find you have time to do those little science experiments, go on an exciting field trip to a local factory or museum. Why home school? You and your children will make much better use of time.

6)Develop the respect for privacy and space: A home-schooled child needs space to grow and develop, as does the parents. The joy of home schooling is a child can learn the dividing line between when they need to concentrate and study, and when they should be an independent thinking and develop their own games and interests. When a child is young, the time for quiet can be during their nap times. When they are older, they can be encouraged to find times for their own private study and self development.

7)Saving money: Sending a child to a state or private school is a very costly affair. There are the daily costs of transport, the expensive uniforms and school trips to pay for before you even start to think of the costs of extra books and materials. The joy of home schooling is that everyone and anyone can decide on a budget – a library is a great place to find free resources and it is nice for a child to hold the book in their hands rather than relying 100% on a computer screen. Of course, the internet is packed full of free, cheap or unique resources, which are often easy to print off and complete. The modern day teacher has so many resources at their finger tips, that they always can find that perfect worksheet or exercise for all learning abilities. Do however remember to not rely on any one source of materials, as even a home-schooled child may have very different learning styles to you. Why home school? You decide how much to spend on your kids education!

8)Make learning fun: You may look back on your own school days with sadness or loathing, and not enjoyed learning. Home schooling your child allows you to become much more flexible and can timetable in lessons as they suit you. I personally find that teaching maths and English first thing work well, while the brain is fresh and as the day draws on, I then move onto the more social or artistic subjects, which are more relaxing and less intellectually taxing. Why home school? Because learning should be fun!

9) Homeschools can make even a social child more social: At school, a lot of the time, the child is expected to be quiet and work. This is because a class of 30 noisy children would never produce the exam results a teacher needs. As a parent, you can spend that special time making your child more sociable – you will quickly develop a ring of like minded friends – or you can find home schooling groups on the internet, and so develop a broader range of friends than a single school could possibly provide. The chances are that your new found friends will come from all walks of life, teaching your child to respect, love and appreciate the diversity of people around them.

10)Increasing the confidence in yourself: There are a 1001 things that we think we cannot do. But think how many challenges we overcome without thinking too much about it. We think of buying a house for $100,000 – we don’t think ‘I can never afford that’ or we marry for life – we don’t think ‘ this is too long!’… it is the same with child care, it all looks more than it is when you look from the outside, but when you get going, you suddenly discover inner strength and new talents you never knew you had. And of course if it does not work out, there is nothing to stop your child from quitting home school and returning to a State school and you can always rest in the peaceful knowledge that you tried. Why home school? Because you only have one chance of giving your kids the education they deserve!
